Sadler's Wells
BLKDOG
Botis Seva's BLKDOG captured live at Sadler's Wells and streamed direct to the Adelaide Festival.
PERFORMED IN LONDON. EXPERIENCED LIVE IN ADELAIDE.
The Challenge
One of our favourite projects, BLKDOG was captured live at Sadler's Wells and streamed to Her Majesty's Theatre in Adelaide as part of the Adelaide Festival. The production took place just as the performing arts were beginning to emerge from lockdown, at a time when live audiences had been absent for almost two years.
The original brief was to create a multi-camera live stream of the performance for audiences in Adelaide. What made the project particularly special was the connection we were able to create between the two venues: a live return feed from Adelaide was displayed across multiple monitors at Sadler's Wells, allowing the performers in London to see the audience they were performing for in real time.
The Method
The production required careful technical planning, live vision mixing, multiple camera positions and specialist sound capture to convey the movement, atmosphere and intimacy of the performance. Cameras were positioned throughout the theatre to provide wide views of the stage alongside close-ups of the dancers, creating a fluid and cinematic live experience for the audience thousands of miles away.
What We Delivered
A multi-camera live stream of the performance from Sadler’s Wells to audiences at Her Majesty’s Theatre in Adelaide, as part of the Adelaide Festival. At the end of the performance, the Adelaide audience rose to give the company a standing ovation. Through the return feed, the performers at Sadler’s Wells were able to see and experience that reaction live. For performers who had been unable to perform to an audience for nearly two years, the emotion in the room was extraordinary. It remains one of the projects we remember most vividly, a powerful example of how live production can do more than transmit a performance: it can connect people across continents and recreate the shared experience of being in a theatre.
